Mozart visited England when he was barely seven years old, and was received kindly by King George III (who twelve years later would find himself at war in the American colonies). At one court performance, little Wolfgang stood before the organ—and between the legs of Johann Christian Bach, the eleventh son of Johann Sebastian. At certain moments in the piece, Bach would stop playing and Wolfgang would continue; then Mozart would pause and Bach resume. The two players alternated with such fluidity that no one guessed that there were two organists in the performance.
